How to Do the K’scope Cheer in 10 Easy Steps

As we had mentioned in the previous blog post, new members of the Workforce are dazed and confused when it comes to the K’scope cheer and we do admit that it can be a little confusing. So, here is how to do the cheer in 10 simple steps for our baby Coords:

      1.     Take a deep breath, and prepare yourself for the ritualistic chanting that signifies the end of an EC-Coord.

      2.     Let all your hard work and pending work flash before your eyes as you lose yourself in the moment.

      3.     Look around you and feel an overwhelming sense of pride and love as you see your team-mates and fellow members of the Workforce getting ready to slay.

      4.     Straighten your back and watch the goose bumps on your arms as your hear the EC shout “ladies, hey!”

      5.     Feel the adrenaline building inside your body and your voice growing louder with each boom-snap-clap.

      6.     Concentrate all your energy on getting the order of the beats right and cheering in perfect sync with the rest of the Workforce.

      7.     Shout out for K’scope as loud as you can and hear the sound reverberate through the campus, giving you chills down your spine.

      8.     Wave around your hands maniacally to get rid of the excess energy because you literally can’t even.

      9.     Do the standard three cheers for your beloved and send a silent prayer to Kay to let this never end.

     10.  Let your heartbeat slowly return to normal. Congratulations, you are a true Coord now!

10 Absolutely True Observations about EC Coord

As the Workforce teeters on the edge of sanity with only a month left for Kaleidoscope (A MONTH, GUYS), the new coordinators are still blissfully unaware of the mildly disturbing amount of possessiveness that the senior Coords harbour towards the fest. As they are still just learning the ropes, EC-Coord can understandably be very intimidating or the most fun ever, depending on how awkward you are, on a scale of 1 to Jennifer Lawrence in the company of other celebrities. So, here are 10 observations about EC-Coord straight from the horse’s (read: new Coord’s) mouth.

     

      1.     The Workforce has no sense of personal space. At all. Or maybe it’s just the 200 people squished onto one set of stairs. But it’s probably the former.

      2.     Newcomers are children. Babies. We don’t know anything. We can barely communicate in the same language.

      3.     Humiliation is the first step to becoming a part of the team. Fear to embarrassment to familiarity, that’s the cycle.

      4.     People will cheer for you when you introduce yourself. Before, during and after. You won’t know why. They just will.

      5.     They’re all judging you. Especially if what you said was strange. Which it almost definitely will be. Brilliant. (Note from Editor: We SWEAR we’re not judging you, we went through the same thing and we love you. It’s just our faces.)

      6.     Open-ended opinionated questions are an important part of getting to know someone. An example: Do you squeeze toothpaste out from the bottom or the top? (Right answer is from the bottom. Don’t be a weirdo.)

      7.     The other important part of getting to know a person is awkward, uncoordinated and random dancing. Whether you like it or not.

      8.     There’s an unreasonable amount of excitement. Constantly. For no reason. Seriously, people would clap if the EC so much as exhales.

      9.     Eventual acceptance of the fact that you are not likely to remember the names of any of your team members is a must.

      10.  People will go BOOM SNAP CLAP, BOOM BOOM SNAP CLAP, HEY, KSCOPE! Out of nowhere and you will have no idea what to with your hands. But don’t worry, you’ll learn eventually.

Welcome, new Coordinators! It’s going to be one hell of a journey. 

The First Pre-Kaleidoscope Event

This norm of disastrously-rainy-yet-humid days normally nip even well thought-out plans in the bud, when the parties involved just raise their hands and grudgingly give in to the social-life destroyer that is the “Bombay (Mumbai, if you really must) monsoons”. Normally, feet are dragged, nae, splashed through muddy, flood-y streets and on to the luxuries of public transport only and only for the sake of hate-it-but-you-still-need-it attendance (75%? 90%?).

However, this day, dear reader, was different. July 22, 2015 (Wednesday), was the day the world witnessed the first pre-Kaleidoscope event and we must say, do not pity the dead, reader, pity the living, and above all those who could not attend this event. You think we’re exaggerating? Okay, picture this: you and your buddy; access to products from one of the trendiest trinket establishments; 20 minutes to glam one of you up; and an actual standing chance to win lust-worthy goodies from the said establishment worth a few G’s. All in all, very much an attainable fantasy for the people who attended and participated in the Accessorize and Kaleidoscope 2015 (#namastekscope #godesigobeyond) event at one of the swanky High Street Phoenix outlets that fateful afternoon.

Girly girls and not-so-girly girls alike, queuing up for their turns as pairs went into the store to “accessorize” each other standing in front of a group of people and actually allowing them to judge the pair was a win-win situation despite the gradually weakening air-conditioning due to the rising heat (and we don’t mean just the temperature). Other than the whole race-against-time-to-look-so-fine element of it, photographers snapping away at their (some successful, some not so much so) attempts was a paparazzi dream come true for the participants. Naturally, the pictures didn’t turn out so bad either (go check out more at our Instagram and Facebook page N.O.W.).

So, let’s back up a minute: A chance to glam up, no holds barred. All the accessories you could get your hands on. Show off your look and win prizes. No fee. You would think it was just a teeny bit short from perfection of an afternoon/evening. And then they went on to hand out tiny juice boxes, because dehydration. I mean, c’mon. Everyone knows free food/drinks is the best way to end a desi event, right?  

Interviews Are Here

It began with an orientation so full of adrenaline that its effects can still be felt a week later, as the campus was flooded with First Year students, ready to sell their soul to Kaleidoscope. Interviews began this week, and the turnout has been overwhelming for every single one of them. In the words of a Marketing coordinator, “Shit just got real”.

Even hours of waiting and what seems like buckets of sweat couldn’t dampen their spirits as the FYs thronged the corridors eager to show off their talents. While some prepared answers in their heads, some indulged in a little gossip about the festival itself. The EC looked on with affection as senior coordinators tried their best to grill the newcomers, who proceeded to answer every question confidently.

The Den, dressed in as much bling as is possible with 20 posters, has also come alive again, standing ready to welcome new members of the Workforce with its doors wide open. The coordinators too cannot wait to delegate some of their never ending work to their new teammates, and hopefully go for bonding sessions- a ritual most loved and yet seldom practiced.

So, to the FYs who will soon be joining the Kaleidoscope Workforce, welcome aboard, kids! And don’t forget to go urban, go desi and go beyond.

IT’S LA-MENTARY

One year ago, after being grilled (and somewhat terrorised) in our interviews, I began my journey as a coordinator for Kaleidoscope. I had no idea what lay in store for me and was thrown headfirst into the chaos we’ve come to know so well and love as Kaleidoscope. Despite the insanely long days and stressful phone calls in the middle of the night, I missed it the moment it was over. The instant the withdrawal symptoms began to ebb, however, it was time to start preparing for Kaleidoscope 2015.

Now, it’s that time of the year again and everybody’s gearing up to say Namaste to Kaleidoscope.  Team LA is just as excited as everybody; needless to say, the act of sacrificing one’s soul for the holy ‘K’ has already begun. You can tell by the number of workforce members glued to their phones and laptops!

A desi tadka makes everything better and we are trying our best to make this year even more special. So, don’t forget the water balloons! This year, LA-K will take you right back to the 90s and to the glorious phase of life known as childhood. Who doesn’t love a water balloon fight or a treasure hunt? Combine the two and you have LA-K!

JAM, one of the most popular events at Kaleidoscope, is back! It’s all about the words, yaar! We hope you’ve armed yourself with enough of them or else, you’ll be forced to pack your jholas and leave. Puns and wordplay, as you can probably guess from the title, are always appreciated. Let the battle of the wits begin! Bring along your thinking topis and your dancing kolhapuris and remember that nothing beats desi jugaad!

Along with our interesting flagship events, we have poetry writing, story writing and essay writing events. So, get ready to unleash the poet or the writer within you. Let your desi identity out and be prepared to encounter everything that makes you so unique, from your favourite Bollywood dialogues to that ridiculous jingle you simply cannot get out of your head. Hop on aboard the local train hurtling through Sophia College this September, which goes by the name of Kaleidoscope.

8 Reasons Why First Years’ Should Join the Workforce

Finally crawling out of the 2 month long textbook filled oven a.k.a the dreaded 12^th Board exams, the high school (or Junior College) veterans are ready to begin a new journey of you-thought-you’d-bunk-lectures-all-the-time-until-you-encountered-minimum-attendance-required. But don’t worry, college will be every bit as exciting as you hope, if you take part in all the right things (hint: Kaleidoscope). The annual inter-collegiate fest takes the cake and every other type of dessert when it comes to having the time of your life. So, to the young ladies entering the Sophia College campus this year, here is why you should join the Workforce, the organizers of one of the largest college festivals in Mumbai.

1)    Instant Friends

With 22 different teams in the Workforce, you are bound to find a way to use your talents in the best way possible and find some of your closest friends in the process. No seriously, your team’s members will serve as your on-campus family before you know it.

2)    Boom Snap Clap!

Don’t let this K’scope cheer make you regret not being a part of the Workforce as it echoes throughout campus giving you goose bumps and an adrenaline rush. And don’t pretend like you don’t practice it secretly at home.

3)    Gain Experience

No matter what team you are in, you will inevitable develop crucial life skills like time management, crisis aversion and how to dress for comfort while still looking reasonably professional.

4)    Food Coupons

This one doesn’t even need any explanation. All the days where you skipped meals because you had too much work will be redeemed, and redeemed well.

5)    The Den

Easy access to what is the coolest room on campus, which will also serve as your second home for a few weeks preceding the festival. Fond memories will be made and the place will give you intense feels every time you walk past it afterwards. Walk up in the Den like what up I got a sponsor!

6)    The Best Seats for Every Event

Flagship events like Das Ka Tees and Electrocuted take place in the Sophia Bhabha Hall, notorious for filling up too fast. That is, unless you’re a coordinator. Because guess who has seats reserved for them right at the front where they can watch everything up close? The same applies to seats for the After 8 event, which is exactly what it sounds like.

7)    Walkie-Talkies
This is practically one of your biggest childhood fantasies come true. Sure, you have cell phones and WhatsApp and text messaging, but nothing compares to the feel of saying ‘over and out’ into a walkie-talkie.

                     

8)    T-shirts

A big part of being Indian is getting way more excited about any free stuff than is appropriate, no matter how trivial it is. Not only do these bad boys distinguish give you authority, you have one more piece of clothing to wear until it becomes the dirty rag that you use to wipe things clean.

So, children, explore your talents, have loads of fun, and when you see an opportunity, take it and go.
